The launch of our new 2024 internship programmes

We are celebrating our ten-year anniversary with an exciting announcement

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Engelhart, we’re looking to the future. We believe that commodity trading has rarely been this important.  We’ve seen the interconnectedness of global trade thrown into sharp relief in recent years: a global pandemic, the Ukraine-Russia conflict, and the acceleration of the transition to net zero.

Commodities are at the heart of all these stories, and our role as a business – whether in price discovery, providing liquidity, or risk warehousing – is crucial to helping these markets function efficiently.

However, we also know that we wouldn’t have the outsized impact we have on these markets without the quality of our talent. Across our global business, from our trading desks to our quants, from our weather team to our back office, it’s our people who have pushed us forward for the last ten years.

“The first ten years of Engelhart has been about attracting the best talent to our business,” says our CEO, Huw Jenkins, “When you start anything new, you need a team of experienced people who’ve already cut their teeth in the industry. But Engelhart’s next ten years will be equally focused on developing our own diverse talent and progressing more women into leadership positions.”

We know how important diversity is to our business, and fundamentally, we believe differences are our strengths. We value an agile, collaborative and entrepreneurial environment where people feel respected, heard and known. Greater diversity of all kinds in commodities is hugely important to us, but we know there’s an urgent need to improve gender representation.

Encouraging female role models

“More female role models are key to inspiring the next generation of commodities talent.”

That was one of the clear messages when we spoke to some of our female leaders across Engelhart as part of Women’s History Month earlier in the year.

You can read that article in full here.

It’s no secret that our industry has historically been male-dominated. We believe it’s our responsibility as a global commodity trading business to step up and help create the change we need. However, we know it’s easy just to talk or write about it; it’s harder to take the necessary steps to address the imbalance.

That’s why we’re excited to announce the details of our first two internship programmes for graduates and undergraduates (details below). We want to give a diverse group of applicants who may not be considering a job in commodities the opportunity to get some exposure to our industry, which includes reaching young women earlier to demonstrate how inclusive and empowering a career in commodities trading can be.

It’s also clear that we need to increase the visibility of senior women in our industry to encourage more women to follow in their footsteps, and that’s why we’re delighted that our Internship programmes are being supported by 100 Women In Finance.

Differences are our strengths

There is no “right” person for a job in commodities. Regardless of gender, ethnicity or socio-economic background, we believe our business thrives with diverse views and ideas around the table.

All our people should feel they can bring their whole selves to work at Engelhart every day. Commodities also shouldn’t feel like a ‘closed shop’, where you only get access with the right background or because you know someone already working in the industry.

That’s a view shared by one of our partners for our Internships, CareerSpring, an organisation that promotes social mobility and opens up careers that feel inaccessible for those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Paul Posoli, Founder of CareerSpring told us:

“We’re very grateful for this partnership, and we’re also inspired by Engelhart’s commitment to providing opportunities in the commodities business to first-generation and low-income students.”

We’re also working with the inspirational organisation, The 10,000 Interns Foundation, which is working towards getting 10,000 interns into paid work experience from underrepresented groups, particularly those from ethnic minorities and disabled people. Their words, “Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not”, are right at the heart of what we’re trying to achieve with our Internships.

Why commodities?

Commodities are a universal business impacting all our lives: the food on our tables, the energy heating our homes, and the technology powering our cars. They are all enabled by trading commodities.

Our industry will only grow in importance in the years and decades to come. Nothing is more crucial than getting the clean energy transition right. Every single one of us has a stake in its success. That’s why we want to play our part in making commodities more representative and inclusive.

We believe there’s no more exciting, dynamic or important job in finance than in commodities right now. If you want to help shape the future, there’s no better place to do it.

We’re excited to announce the details of our first two internship programmes for graduates and undergraduates.

Our 2024 Internship Programmes

Launching our first internships this week starts a new journey for Engelhart. We also hope it’s a unique opportunity for applicants who may not have considered commodities to gain exposure to the industry.

In 2024, we’ll be running two programmes, one for graduates, which will be 3-6 months long and involve being an active member of one of our front office teams, either one of our trading desks, our weather team or IT.

The other is for undergraduates and will run for six weeks next summer. Successful candidates will rotate between the front, middle, and back offices.

Our CEO, Huw Jenkins, told us why he believes an internship at Engelhart is a real opportunity to get first-hand experience in an exciting and dynamic industry:

“We know there are some brilliant undergraduates and graduates who may not be thinking about a career in commodities but would be interested in getting the exposure if given the opportunity. I think what makes Engelhart an attractive proposition for applicants is our lack of hierarchy, our agility and entrepreneurial culture. You’ll get a really hands-on experience that you may not get with other internships. I’m really looking forward to seeing some of the applications.”

Graduate Internship

We are looking for approximately 15 Interns across our Stamford, Houston, London and Geneva offices who will join one of our Front Office teams for 3-6 months.

During the Graduate Internship Programme, you will take part in Engelhart’s mentorship scheme. You will be paired with a more experienced professional who will provide guidance and support. This scheme is designed to help you transition into your new role and give you the tools and resources you need to be successful.

As an Intern, you will support your team by actively participating in tasks and projects. This internship is a hands-on learning experience, allowing you to develop skills relevant to your field of study and make meaningful contributions to your team and Engelhart.

Undergraduate Internship

We’re looking for a cohort of undergraduates to work across our global offices in Stamford, Houston, London, or Geneva. If successful, you will join your relevant office next Summer for six weeks. You will be exposed to the fundamental components of the global commodities industry while on a rotation with various teams across Front Office, Middle Office and Back Office.

During your Undergraduate Internship at Engelhart, you will take part in our ‘Buddy Programme’, where you will have the opportunity to be paired with a more experienced professional who will provide you with guidance and support. This will help you transition into the Internship and provide you with the tools and resources you need to be successful.

Application Process

If you or anyone you know might be interested in applying for one of our 2024 Internships, the application process is simple and straightforward.
